Shenzhen went from fishing village to megacity in one generation. In 1980 Deng Xiaoping designated it China's first Special Economic Zone (
经济特区), and its population exploded from about 30,000 to over 17 million. Today it is home to Tencent, Huawei, DJI, and BYD, and is often called China's Silicon Valley.
