Shenzhen went from fishing village to megacity in one generation. In 1980 Deng Xiaoping designated it China's first Special Economic Zone (经济特区), and its population exploded from about 30,000 to over 17 million. Today it is home to Tencent, Huawei, DJI, and BYD, and is often called China's Silicon Valley.
