Meizhou self-brands as 世界客都 ("Hakka Capital of the World") — more than 80% of its population are Hakka (客家), and the city is a pilgrimage destination for Hakka diaspora from Southeast Asia returning to visit ancestral villages.

Meizhou is the ancestral hometown of many prominent figures: Taiping Rebellion leader 洪秀全 (ancestrally), Singapore's founding PM 李光耀 (Lee Kuan Yew), and football hall-of-famer 李惠堂.
