国家级新区 (state-level new areas) are special development zones designated by the State Council with their own planning powers.
浦东新区 (Pudong, 1990),
滨海新区 (Binhai, 1994), and
雄安新区 (Xiong'an, 2017) are the most famous. The term contrasts with the older
经济特区 (special economic zones).
