国家级新区 (state-level new areas) are special development zones designated by the State Council with their own planning powers — Pudong (
浦东新区, 1990), Binhai (
滨海新区, 1994), and Xiong'an (
雄安新区, 2017) are the most famous. The term contrasts with the older
经济特区 (special economic zones).
