One of Hainan's 四大名菜 (Four Great Dishes of Hainan), alongside 加积鸭, 和乐蟹, and 东山羊. The chicken breed is raised in 文昌市 on banyan fruit and peanut bran, which gives the meat its fatty, yellow skin. Traditionally prepared by poaching whole (白切) and served cold with a ginger-scallion dip.

The ancestor of Singapore/Malaysia's Hainanese chicken rice (海南鸡饭) - carried overseas by Wenchang migrants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
