  1. 1 to poke and shake (a stove) to make the ashes fall and revive the fire

Poke the stove with a rod so the ash falls and the fire burns up again.

The sòu reading is colloquial and dialectal, mostly northern, for shaking a coal stove to drop the ash and revive the flame. In Taiwan it is also pronounced sǒu.
