擂台 lèitái was originally a raised stage in old China where a martial artist would stand and 摆擂台 bǎi lèitái ("set up the platform") — anyone could climb up and challenge them. The winner held the stage until beaten. The format survives today in TV competition shows like 《歌手》 and 《最强大脑》.
