In 赛 the shells are the offerings or prizes at stake — the wealth presented in thanksgiving sacrifice, later the rewards of victory. The bottom 贝 is the indexing radical for the entry, anchoring 赛 in the money-and-wealth family alongside 财, 货, 资, 贵.

Top roof radical extending down through a fused middle element — historically 赛 stacked 宀 (roof) over a graph of two hands offering ceremonial items, a shape that simplified into the modern criss-crossed middle strokes. Together they frame 赛 as ritual offering made under temple eaves: gifts presented in thanks to the gods. From 'thanksgiving sacrifice' came today's 'compete, contest, match' (比赛 match, 决赛 final, 联赛 league).
