It was set up in 1987 in Shenzhen's Shekou by the state-owned China Merchants Group (招商局), as China's first joint-stock bank owned entirely by companies. It is known for retail banking and was early to push credit cards.

Short form 招行. 招商 means 'to attract business'; the English name China Merchants follows its parent group's.
