Tips

history
溥仪 wrote a first version while held at the 抚顺战犯管理所 in the 1950s. Reworked with the editor 李文达, it was published in 1964, five years after his pardon, and runs from his enthronement as a small child to his new life as a citizen of the People's Republic. It was a main source for Bertolucci's 1987 film 末代皇帝 (The Last Emperor).
usage
前半生 'the first half of one's life' is an ordinary word, and the title has been reused. The Hong Kong writer 亦舒 gave it to her 1982 novel about a pampered wife who must rebuild her life after divorce, and its 2017 TV adaptation, moved to Shanghai, was a major hit.
