Xu studied at King's College, Cambridge 1921–22 — the background for his signature poem 《》 (Saying Goodbye to Cambridge Again, 1928). He died at 34 in a plane crash in fog outside Jinan. His tangled love life (Zhang Youyi, Lin Huiyin, Lu Xiaoman) has been mined by Chinese TV dramas for decades.
