Tips

history
From 》 (Xu Zhimo, 1928), the most beloved modern Chinese lyric poem, written after revisiting Cambridge: 轻轻正如轻轻轻轻招手西天云彩 (Softly I am leaving, just as softly I came; I wave my hand in parting, bidding farewell to the western clouds). The poem closes with the same line inverted. Xu Zhimo was one of the Crescent Moon Society's founding poets; he died in a plane crash three years later.
usage
Note the (de) here functions as (adverbial marker) — a Republican-era spelling convention Xu used consistently. The full line is 正如轻轻, but the clause 轻轻 / 轻轻 circulates on its own as a gentle-exit motif.
