Tips

history
Married into the ruling Cao family and openly scornful of office, he made enemies of the Sima clan. In 262 司马昭 had him executed after the official 钟会 slandered him, though three thousand students petitioned for his life. Before he died he played 《广陵散》 and said the tune would die with him, so the name came to mean something lost forever.
culture
One of the 竹林七贤 'Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove', he is remembered for his letter breaking off friendship with 山涛, who had recommended him for office, and for an essay arguing that music in itself holds neither joy nor sorrow.
