history
In 617, 平阳公主, daughter of the future founder of the Tang dynasty, raised an army of some 70,000 to back her father's rising against the Sui. Her camp was called 娘子军 because a woman commanded it. Today the word is used, often playfully, for any team made up of women, such as a women's sports team.
