呼和浩特 is a phonetic transcription of the Mongolian 'Kökeqota' (ᠬᠥᠬᠡᠬᠣᠲᠠ), meaning 'blue/green city'. It was founded in 1581 by Altan Khan. The short name 呼市 (Hūshì) is widely used.
culture
Hohhot is home to major dairy giants Yili (伊利) and Mengniu (蒙牛), making it China's dairy capital. It's also a gateway city to the Mongolian grasslands and hosts an important annual Naadam festival.
