吴哥窟 is Angkor Wat, the great temple, and 吴哥城 is Angkor Thom, the walled city. 吴哥 alone means the whole site, a World Heritage Site since 1992.
history
The fullest early account of the city was written by 周达观, a Yuan envoy who stayed there in 1296 and 1297. His 《真腊风土记》 (A Record of Cambodia; 真腊 is the old Chinese name for the Khmer state) is still read by historians.
