Historically Chinese hospitals earned a large share of revenue from drug sales through their in-house pharmacy - the so-called 以药养医 ('use drugs to feed medicine') problem. A 2017 reform abolished drug markups at public hospitals, aiming to decouple medical practice from drug profits.
