Tips

history
Traditionally attributed to Han Yu (韩愈, Tang dynasty): 书山有路勤为径学海无涯苦作舟 - 'The mountain of books has a road: diligence is its path. The sea of learning has no shore: suffering is its boat.' Whether truly by Han Yu is debated, but it has become the canonical Chinese school motto - a near-universal poster in classrooms and libraries.
usage
Always paired with its twin 学海无涯苦作舟 (next entry in this batch). here = 'to be / serve as' (classical copula).
