Ancient city in southern Shanxi on the Fen River (
汾河). Traditionally regarded as the capital of the legendary Emperor Yao (
尧都); the Yao Temple (
尧庙) still stands here. Hong Tong (
洪洞) in Linfen is the famous
大槐树 "Great Scholar Tree" emigration site from which Ming-dynasty populations resettled across North China. In the 2000s Linfen gained notoriety as one of the world's most polluted cities due to coal and coking — air quality has improved significantly since.
