Ancient city in southern Shanxi on the Fen River (汾河). Traditionally regarded as the capital of the legendary Emperor Yao (尧都); the Yao Temple (尧庙) still stands here. Hong Tong (洪洞) in Linfen is the famous 大槐树 "Great Scholar Tree" emigration site from which Ming-dynasty populations resettled across North China. In the 2000s Linfen gained notoriety as one of the world's most polluted cities due to coal and coking - air quality has improved significantly since.
