Written short as 中共; in speech people say 共产党 or just 党 'the Party'. A member is a 党员, and joining is 入党.

Its First Congress opened in Shanghai in July 1921 and ended on a boat on the 南湖 (South Lake) in 嘉兴. July 1 was chosen as the anniversary in the late 1930s, when nobody could remember the exact date.
