After Quanrong nomads sacked the Western Zhou capital in 771 BC, King Ping moved the court east to Luoyi (, modern Luoyang) — hence 'Eastern'. Central royal power collapsed and real politics moved to the competing states, making this the age of Confucius, Laozi, and the Hundred Schools.
