Tips

history
Written by 陈寿 (233–297), a former official of Shu who served the Western Jin, in 65 scrolls divided into three books: 魏书 on Wei, 蜀书 on Shu and 吴书 on Wu. It is terse, and the commentary that 裴松之 finished in 429 adds a great deal from other sources. It is the fourth of the 二十四史.
usage
Not the novel 三国演义, the Ming retelling built on this history. Lines are cited by book and biography, as in 《三国志·蜀书·诸葛亮传》 for the life of Zhuge Liang.
