history
Taken from Du Fu's Tang poem 曲江: 酒债寻常行处有人生七十古来稀 ('wine debts are everywhere, but living to seventy has always been rare'). In a pre-modern world where life expectancy was around 35, 70 was an extraordinary milestone, hence 古稀 is still a common respectful term for the age.
