Shang-dynasty diviners bored hollows into tortoise plastrons and ox shoulder blades, heated them and read the cracks. The questions and answers carved beside the cracks are
甲骨文, oracle-bone script, named after
龟甲 and
兽骨 (animal bone). Traditional Chinese medicine still uses the plastron as a drug, also called
龟板.
