The literal dish is a Cantonese stew combining snake (
龙) and cat (
虎); some versions substitute chicken (
凤) for
龙虎凤 three-kinds stew. The dish is now largely historical - wildlife protection laws restrict the original recipe. The idiomatic sense (two titans clashing) and the casino card-game sense are both current.
