Tips

history
His poem 《早梅》 'Early Plum' had the line 前村深雪里,昨夜数枝开 'in the deep snow of the village ahead, last night several branches bloomed'. The poet 郑谷 pointed out that several branches in bloom were not early, and suggested 一枝 'one branch'. Qiji bowed to him as his 一字之师 'teacher of one word'.
culture
齐己 is his name as a monk: he was born into a poor farming family in Hunan and entered a monastery as a boy. More than eight hundred of his poems survive, one of the largest bodies of work by any Tang monk.
