鲛 (jiāo) is the classical word for 'shark' — the modern everyday term is
鲨鱼 (shāyú).
青鲛 literally means 'green/blue shark' from its dark steel-blue back. The character
鲛 also appears in mythology as
鲛人 jiāorén, the Chinese mer-people whose tears turn into pearls.
