From Du Fu's 杜甫 《月夜忆舍弟》: 戍鼓断人行，边秋一雁声。露从今夜白，月是故乡明. Written in 759 at Qinzhou, when the poet was scattered from his younger brothers during the An Lushan rebellion. 'Tonight' is the night of the White Dew 白露 solar term, one of the twenty-four solar terms.
usage
Always cited with its pair 月是故乡明. 白露 is one of the twenty-four solar terms (around September 7-9); the ancients held that the dew turns white from this night. The two lines are the most common quotation for Mid-Autumn and homesickness occasions.
