mistakes
Read 难, not nán: the sense is the one in 问难 'to raise hard questions', since the book takes up eighty-one difficult points in the 黄帝内经. Its full title is 黄帝八十一难经.
history
Traditionally credited to the legendary physician 扁鹊, it was probably written around the 1st or 2nd century. It established reading the pulse at the wrist alone, at the 寸口, which is still standard, and its line 'to know by looking is divine' ranks the four ways of diagnosis.
