阿 is the affectionate familiar prefix common in southern China and
甘 (gān) was chosen to phoneticize 'Gump'. The 1994 film 《
阿甘正传》 (literally 'The Authentic Biography of A Gan') was a huge hit in mainland China and the name has since been borrowed for any naively persistent person.
