The name literally means 'Copper Ridge' - and Tongling is one of China's oldest continuous copper-mining sites, with Shang-dynasty (1600-1046 BCE) smelting slag found at the local copper mines. Still a major producer today, the city nicknames itself 中国古铜都 'China's ancient capital of copper.'
