铁观音 literally means "Iron Goddess of Mercy" (
观音 = Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion). Legend says a poor farmer in Anxi, Fujian faithfully cleaned an abandoned Guanyin statue; she appeared in a dream and led him to the original tea plant. The best Tieguanyin still comes from Anxi County.
