history
Founded in 1962 by Taiwan's Government Information Office; since 1984 organized by film-industry bodies. Named for the islands of 金门 (Jīnmén, Kinmen) and 马祖 (Mǎzǔ, Matsu) — front-line ROC territories at the time. The trophy is a golden horse statue.
culture
Often called the 'Chinese-language Oscars' (华语奥斯卡 Huáyǔ Àosīkǎ): open to films in any Chinese language regardless of region, making it historically the most prestigious award for Sinophone cinema.
