Two distinct senses share the same word. In linguistics it pairs with 本义 (běnyì, 'original meaning'); in computing it pairs with 转义字符 (zhuǎnyì zìfú, 'escape character') or 转义序列 ('escape sequence'). Context disambiguates immediately.

转 = 'turn / shift,' 义 = 'meaning.' For both senses the same picture works: the meaning 'turns' from one form into another — either from literal to figurative, or from a normal character to a control character.
