Legend says a tiger fleeing a hunter crossed the river here in one bound, landing on a rock in midstream, the 虎跳石. The gorge cuts between 玉龙雪山 and 哈巴雪山, almost 4,000 metres below their peaks, one of the deepest gorges in the world.
