From the Tang poet Liu Yuxi's 《赏牡丹》: 庭前芍药妖无格, 池上芙蕖净少情. 唯有牡丹真国色, 花开时节动京城. It depicts the mid-Tang craze for peony viewing in Chang'an, when nobles and commoners alike poured out to see them. The phrase 国色天香 derives from this poem.
