culture
Lu Xun's 1932 poem 《自嘲》 (Self-Mockery) is one of modern Chinese literature's best-known poems — the line 横眉冷对千夫指,俯首甘为孺子牛 ('Fierce-browed I coolly defy a thousand pointing fingers; head bowed I gladly serve as an ox for the children') comes from it.
memory
自 (self) + 嘲 (to mock) — literally 'mock self.' The 嘲 character also appears in 嘲笑 (cháoxiào, to ridicule).
