Tips

history
Before money taxation was universal, imperial China collected the (tiánfù, 'field tax') largely in kind. 纳粮 captures that arrangement: (nà) 'to hand in' + (liáng) 'grain'. The system persisted into the Qing and didn't fully end until the 2006 abolition of the agricultural tax.
register
Mostly historical or literary today. In modern usage you'll see it in period dramas and historical writing rather than current tax discussion, where (jiāoshuì) 'pay tax' is standard.
