竺 is best known in 天竺, the name Tang-era China used for India, especially in Buddhist texts. It is also a surname; the famous scientist Zhu Kezhen wrote his name 竺 Kezhen. An old 竺 reading existed as a variant of 笃 (sincere) but is no longer used.
