The name transliterates Sanskrit Ullambana. It comes from the story of 目连, a disciple of the Buddha who saved his mother from hunger in the underworld by offering food to monks on this day. Popular religion keeps the same day as 中元节, and Japan's Obon, お盆 (obon), grew out of it.
