生子 is a literary/formal verb-object compound — in everyday speech you'd say
生孩子 (shēng háizi) or
生小孩.
子 here is the older sense of 'child / son', preserved in classical-flavored expressions like
不孝有三，
无后为大 (the worst unfilial act is having no descendants). News and biographical writing still use
生子.
