王莹 (1913-1974) was a Shanghai-era actress who starred in leftist films like 《
自由神》 (1935) and 《
女性的呐喊》, then led wartime anti-Japanese theatre tours before going to the US, where she famously performed 《
放下你的鞭子》 at the White House for the Roosevelts in 1943. She died in prison during the Cultural Revolution.
