狞 (níng) carries the
犭 (dog) radical and means 'fierce / ferocious' — think of the snarl of a wild beast. Combined with
笑 (smile),
狞笑 is the 'beast-grin' of cartoon villains, demons, and wuxia bad guys. Almost exclusively literary and dramatic; you wouldn't use it for a real human's smile.
