焦作 is the gateway to 云台山 (Mount Yuntai) - a UNESCO Global Geopark famous for the 红石峡 red sandstone gorge and filming locations for countless wuxia series. Historically the city was a coal-mining center run by a British-Italian company from 1898, making it one of the earliest modern industrial cities in inland China.
memory
焦 means 'scorched/burnt' - a useful mnemonic for a city that made its name on coal.
