Known to Europeans as the Pescadores ('fishermen') from the Portuguese name. The Mongol Yuan dynasty set up an administrative office here in 1281 — making Penghu the first part of the Taiwan area to come under formal Chinese-empire administration, three centuries before the main island.
culture
Famous for the song 《外婆澎湖》 (Wàipó de Pénghúwān, 'Grandma's Penghu Bay') by Pan An-pang — one of the most iconic Mandarin folk songs of the 1980s.
