Moonlight rippled and shimmered across the river surface.
Tips
usage
滟 describes water surface that shimmers and tosses with light. It is the second half of the literary pair 潋滟, and is best known from 苏轼's West Lake couplet. Do not confuse it with 艳 (gorgeous), which is its sound element but a different character.
Supplies the sound. Standalone 艳 means gorgeous or richly colored; here it gives the exact yàn reading, and its sense of dazzling brightness faintly suits water that glitters in light.
