海 (hǎi) = sea,
马 (mǎ) = horse — a seahorse really does look like a tiny horse underwater. The same name applies to the hippocampus in the brain, which is curved like a seahorse: hippos (horse) + kampos (sea monster) in Greek, giving us the same metaphor across languages.
