Built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan between 1632 and 1653 as a tomb for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. The Chinese name combines
泰姬 (Tài jī) — phonetic for 'Taj' (with
姬 carrying the connotation of 'beautiful lady') — and
陵 (líng), the formal Chinese word for an imperial tomb.
